Questions & Answers

How much does it cost for me to participate?

$0 – it’s free. This is an all-volunteer project, with involvement by community organizations and donations of found materials by local residents.

I’m [not] an artist. Can I participate?

Yes, the art-making teams are intended to be diverse, and we encourage participation by interested people of any experience level. Everyone brings their own ideas, background, skills, and interests.

I’m a teacher or program leader. Can I adapt Seeing from the Heart for my students or program members?

Yes, we encourage you to do that. We’re happy to help if desired.

What if I can’t make it to the kickoff meeting on October 5?

Let us know now, and we’ll try to find a way to accommodate you.

Where will my team meet?

Our kickoff meeting, with all teams, at 10:20am on Saturday, October 5, will be at Montclair Art Museum. Subsequent meetings, with just your team, will be at a local venue provided by our co-sponsor organizations. Your team’s venue will depend on the times that the team chooses to meet.

I understand that my team sessions are mainly to discuss, design, review, and assemble our artwork. But can we also make our art components together in our meetings?

We don’t want participants to feel obligated to have long meetings with discussion, design, and art-making. So our basic idea is to let each team member work individually at home on the art-making, between team sessions.

However, if some teammates want to meet together to make their art components, that’s great! It’s best to do this in a way that lets all interested teammates feel included, while also allowing other teammates full opportunity to make their art components individually if they prefer.

Do we have to meet at the venues offered by the Seeing from the Heart co-sponsors? Or can we find our own meeting places, like a local cafe, or a teammate’s home?

Adult teams are free to meet wherever and whenever they agree to. Individual team members should not agree to meet somewhere they don’t feel is safe, comfortable, and convenient.

For safety and good order, family teams with minors should always meet at a co-sponsor venue.

Are we limited to using only found materials?

We encourage you to use found materials – from the collection that we’ve gathered and any other materials that you find and reuse on your own. It’s not a requirement, but we like the idea of all teams being on the same footing, and also your creativity in figuring out ways to reuse nontraditional materials in art.

I have more questions.
